Review: The Council Oak Tree Is Always Humming
History and music converged in "The Song Of The Council Oak"
“Next to houseplants and vines that twinkled with projection-mapped lights, Kuykendall sat under the image of the tree and played us its song. Sometimes it sounded like a benevolent warning, one you might hear from a mother figure. Sometimes I heard a whisper, a warm trill, a growl of hunger. The sounds ranged from ominous and erratic to fervent and almost hopeful as Kuykendall shaped the tree’s complex tonal energy. The fourth and last movement ended with Kuykendall letting unprocessed sounds from the Council Oak itself pour out in a wave of fierce noise: warbling, formless notes growled from the tree like the song of a whale.” - Annie Jones (The Pickup)

Plant Music: Song of the Council Oak
A tribute to the historic Council Oak Tree, a vital symbol of resilience and the foundation of the Muscogee Creek Nation in Tulsa. Composer Mark Kuykendall recorded biofeedback directly from the Council Oak Tree in September and October 2024, capturing its natural rhythms and vitality. This data has been transformed into music, voiced by Oklahoma’s first Buchla synthesizer. The result is a performance that symbolizes both the founding of Tulsa in 1836 and a milestone in the city’s synthesis history. The performance was recorded at the Chimera Ballroom in downtown Tulsa, Feb. 23, 2025 - Jerrad Moore [Mvsoke Media]
